First Interstate Bancorp

Dr. Kamin joined First Interstate Bank to assume the newly created position of Vice President and Manager of Industry Economics. Dr. Kamin supported the bank’s credit policy committee in the allocation of credit among industries in its $30 billion commercial-loan portfolio.  Dr. Kamin managed studies of credit risks and opportunities in the industries constituting major concentrations in the bank’s commercial loan portfolio. Fifteen industry studies were prepared annually, covering almost fifty sub-industies at the three- and four-digit SIC levels.

The studies examined conditions of supply, demand, pricing, technology and regulatory environment in each industry. Research was performed on the following industries: aerospace, agriculture, communications, energy, financial institutions, health care, high technology, insurance, real estate, transportation and utilities. Dr. Kamin’s industry studies were attached to credit analyses for commercial loans and were distributed to executives throughout the First Interstate system.
